Instant Sodium Silicate Powder in Coatings

Instant sodium silicate powder is mainly used in coatings as a binder, film-forming agent, and functional additive. It significantly improves the coating's adhesion, water resistance, and durability. Its specific functions and mechanisms in coatings are detailed below:

1. Core Functions: Binding and Film-Forming

This is the most important function of instant sodium silicate in coatings. It firmly binds the various components (such as pigments and fillers) within the coating formulation and forms a tough film on the substrate surface.

  • Binder/Adhesive: Instant sodium silicate is the core binding material in water-based inorganic coatings. It penetrates into the capillaries of the substrate (e.g., cement, concrete, masonry) and reacts with components like calcium hydroxide to form insoluble calcium silicate gel, creating extremely strong adhesion.

  • Film-Forming Agent: After water evaporates, the instant sodium silicate particles fuse and solidify, forming a dense, hard silicate film. This film not only provides good abrasion resistance but also offers basic protective functions for the coating.

2. Specific Performance Contributions

Beyond its basic binding function, instant sodium silicate imparts several key properties to coatings:

Property

Specific Role

Enhanced Adhesion

Bonds chemically with inorganic substrates, forming chemical bonds. Adhesion is far superior to ordinary organic coatings, resisting peeling and shedding.

Improved Water Resistance

The formed silicate film is itself insoluble in water and fills the micropores of the coating, effectively preventing water penetration and significantly improving water resistance and impermeability.

Increased Durability

Silicate coatings exhibit excellent weatherability, aging resistance, and weathering resistance, long resisting UV radiation, temperature changes, and humidity fluctuations, extending the coating's service life.

Increased Hardness and Abrasion Resistance

The cured coating has a ceramic-like or glass-like texture, high hardness, and resists everyday scratching and wear.

Enhanced Stain Resistance

The dense surface makes it difficult for dust and dirt to adhere. Even if contaminated, it is relatively easy to clean, keeping the wall surface clean for longer.

3. Specific Applications in Coating Systems

Instant sodium silicate is a key component in various high-performance coatings:

  • Powder Coatings: In interior wall powder coatings, it is often combined with polyvinyl alcohol, titanium dioxide, etc., playing a crucial binding and film-forming role.

  • Inorganic Coatings/Mineral Coatings: Used as the primary film-forming agent to prepare high-quality, environmentally friendly, fire-resistant, breathable inorganic wall coatings.

  • Specialty Coatings: Used to formulate acid-resistant cements, fireproof coatings, waterproof coatings, etc., to meet specific engineering requirements.

4. Advantages and Precautions for Use

  • Main Advantages: Compared to traditional liquid sodium silicate, instant sodium silicate is a white powder. It offers advantages such as convenient transportation and storage, accurate metering, long shelf life, and fast dissolution rate, making it particularly suitable for modern, automated coating production lines.

  • Precautions:

    • Alkalinity: Sodium silicate solution is strongly alkaline. Appropriate safety precautions (such as wearing gloves and goggles) should be taken during use.

    • Curing Conditions: The curing process requires a dry air environment (through water loss and reaction with CO₂). Curing speed slows down in humid or confined environments.

    • Compatibility: Generally not suitable for use in organic coating systems. When compounding with organic emulsions, strict compatibility testing is required to prevent issues like emulsion breaking or thickening.
